I have fond memories for these guys in my angst teen years growing up in the boring arse-end of nowhere in the west of Ireland. Maybe that's why I'm still pretty biased for this band.

"if they had released shogun right after this and then continued to release albums that built on that album's maturity, this would have the been the beginning of gamechanging.... instead they fucked up"
Haha yeah that sounds much better. Man, if that actually happened though...

Rechecked this for the first time in years and it delivered. Thought I was remembering wrongly after how shit their newest was but nope.

Plenty of decent tracks here.

Honestly liking this a lot more than I remember. It's been a long while since I've listened to it.

I agree, album is better than I thought it was

All it takes is a new album to make you like the early shit even more. Exact same thing happened with TBDM
|
| |
New album has shitty vocals and none of the memorable riffs nor solo sections from this... drums are even shittier.

New album is way better than a lot of their stuff, Ghost
Like way better outside of this and Shogun and like parts of In Waves

Is that really a high bar tho?
|
| |
I ask that genuinely as someone who hasn't heard most of their previous two albums and thought the newest one was a pile of trash.

No it's not that high of a bar lol but still.
I dunno, I think the new album is catchy. It's not exactly golden age Opeth quality, but it's fun.

I literally remember one thing from the entire album and it was a small grindcore section on Sever the Hand. That's it. It was grim.
