if u do don't sleep on secaucus, it's almost a better starting point than meadowlands, shorter songs and rocks harder

nah check this asap. it's one of the most essential 'unknown' indie albums and you should spend time with it!

I did check a song from this a while ago and wasn't too keen on it (it was a bit too emo for me iirc) but hopefully I dig the whole thing a but more.

which one was it? the opener 'happy' is super emo compared to the rest of the album, whiny vocals and all and it put me off for a while. if that's the case the rest is much more classic indie-rock in sound, miserable as fuck but not angsty

Couldn't tell you which song it was. Good to know that the majority of the album is not that emo though.

So what's the story with this band? How come they only record so sporadically?

basically after secaucus (2nd LP) they got a decent amount of hype and were set up to at least be a successful indie band. then their record label (grass records) got bought out by wind-up records and the band were pressured to tone down their sound for airplay etc. they refused to do this (and wind-up later became best known for creed and evanescence lmao) and so were kicked/left in the middle of the sessions that would become the meadowlands. they all had to go back to their day jobs so it took like 5 miserable years for the meadowlands to come out, hence how downcast it is.

after that they basically had to go back to their day jobs which obviously delayed things, + general burnout and disillusionment + perfectionism + charles (frontman) almost dying twice of 1) sepsis and 2) cancer delayed things to where we are now

Holy fuck, that song is everything I ever wanted in new Wrens material. Between that and Pulled Fences I have no doubt that they still have it within them to release perfect 100/100 songs.

Interesting history jeff, thanks for that. It really sucks when clearly talented bands can't make it when thousands of weak ones manage to have stable careers.

that's just how it goes i guess. if anything the wrens are extremely lucky in that they built a cult fanbase after the fact instead of fading into obscurity

It's true, these guys' case isn't nearly as sad as one like Gavin Clark for instance.
