i don't know, but my request from the dissenters is to rec me a band that can pull off the "new PT" style of music better than PT.

But what IS the "new PT" style? Check out Neal Morse's new stuff, I guess.

I wouldn't actually call this prog really. I'd just call it cleverly written alt rock. people have a tendency to call everything that has that extra level of composition skill 'rpog'. It's not - it's just good

I think it's got a foot on both sides of the line. Like A Perfect Circle. It's alt rock with a progressive edge, particularly on this album.

Yeah exactly. Normal rock with some clever bits thrown in. I just don't think everything 'clever' necessarily makes something prog, though this probably is. I don't think A Perfect Circle is though...

Yea it's not entirely prog music. Much like Dredg, it's proggy alt rock. Sometimes it has a structure and sometimes it doesn't. And emyay, check out Rishloo. One of my favorites.

Well prog rock I think is defined as rock music that is more textured and veers away from standard rock song structures. So by that definition I think PT, APC and even bands like Radiohead and Muse have elements of progressive rock.

Oh yea they definitely do. APC's Orestes is very progressive. Tool is prog metal/rock and even some of

their songs have structures. It's all about the lyrics and structures that give it the prog name. Plus

there's a lot more going on in prog rock/metal.

i'd say that the "progressive" tag on a band/albums boils down to an even mix of innovation and bravery. In other words, it's got to be 1 part weird, 1 part unique and 1 part awesome.

Absolutely. I always find myself being down to bands with the "progressive" genre under their name.

Mad.

For me prog is longer songs, unique structures and masterful instrumentation.
