I mean chino sounds fucking excelllent.

The guitar riffs are painfully basic. They really push the sound

Bass and drums are dope.

Don’t want to put it all on one person. But I kinda will. The guitar riffs here are really lacking

Yeah Steph is the weak link now, musically and personally

They should vote him off the island (he'll have to make a raft or try to wave down a ship and hope it doesn't sail off the Earth)

Ohms > Diamond Eyes = White Pony > SNW > KNY = Private Music > Gore > ATF > Deftones > Adrenaline

Honestly, Adrenaline and Gore as #1 are probably more respectable than Ohms as #1 (still, Gore would be equally insane). It's probably the most asinine take anyone can have in regards to Deftones ranking ngl

I got into Deftones on the late side (didn't hear WP until 2009), so when Diamond Eyes dropped in 2010 I was totally enamored. I think I just lean towards their more modern stuff, and Ohms is like an even better produced Diamond Eyes IMO. Genesis, Urantia, Error, Mathematics, Pompeji, Link, and Headless are all among their best moments (for me).

I hear you, but for me Ohms is a huge outlier in their "modern" era. It doesn't sound anything like DE or KNY. Even Gore has more of a continuity claim than Ohms and for me PM is the natural progression of that modern sound, to the point where it sounds like it was a conscious decision to go back to the earlier Raskulinecz style of production & engineering.

For me, Ohms was missing a lot of the melodic sensibilities & dynamic key changes, as well as any sense of urgency and focus. It sounds like an album recorded separately by different people at different points of time, attempted to be assembled together later in production. People were also praising Franks's increased use of synths, but the more the album ages, the more I am of the opinion that they are there to simply mask the lack of substance present on the album, and to elevate what are otherwise very non-eventful songs into shiny pieces with a cinematic sheen. However, it still feels lifeless to me.

It's funny because I found myself thinking just about the complete opposite of everything you said as I read it. I think that Ohms and DE are very melodic and smoothly produced, whereas Gore and PM are more raw and almost have a live sound. I clearly prefer the former style over the latter, which makes sense, because I'm a pop head. I actually think that Ohms is the peak of their melodic sensibility; every song is super memorable and engaging. You might be right that there's more going on dynamically with other releases, but for me Ohms just feels special. It resonates emotionally and is layered beautifully.

KNY is the middle ground for me. It has a little of DE/Ohms melodic beauty and a little of Gore/PM's rawness. I could easily see why so many people adore it.

My residual notion of Deftones will always be 'Around the Fur', still my most regularly played album by them, think it flows the best and is the most consistent.

Still sound the heaviest and most 'alive' on it, best groove, but 'White Pony's experimentation and polish was impressive at the time, a little left field from what was expected.

Listening to ATF now and their chorus game was way better back then and I like how they don't break stride delivering them, most are high tempo choruses.

Dunno how the album would come across working backwards through their discog though. 'Lotion' is so breathless, def the track that stood out a lot this listen as maybe better than I remembered.
