It has tempo shifts , I dont know about time signatures, I've listened to it like 2 times but it sounded progy to me. It mixes genres pretty well too.

what does 'progressive by nature' even mean?

by that logic, half of bm artists are prog, because most of their songs are over 7 mins long, contain lots of different riffs, harmonies, and technical elements

nobody calls mare cognitum or blut aus nord prog, for good reason

ulcerate and AN are dissodeath

I like some prog - Enslaved, most Opeth (fuck ghost reveries and sorceress though)

But calling everything that doesn't follow conventional song structures prog is silly

Dissodeath never progs, like at all, yeah. No such thing as progressive death metal. Lol. If you reduce it down to the degree you are, nothing is progressive - what you're left with is all the wannabe copycat 70s prog bands, because that's all your criteria is allowing for.

Ad Nauseam's latest album was progressive af and I'm pretty sure you enjoyed it.

I feel some people are throwing it around as a blanket term for everything nowadays

there's plenty of post metal that crosses over into prog concepts like Falls of Rauros and Dead to a Dying World

Progressive is a stupid label imo, but I love prog, even modern prog.

And what makes something progressive? I don't think we'll ever find a satisfying answer tbh. Even the "prog is regressive now" argument gets more and more stupid by the minute.

If we go back to when I mentioned CoL, I didn't actually call them prog - I said 'prog elements'. Same with Ad Nauseam. I wouldn't actually say 'this is a prog band'. I'm just of the opinion that the term itself is reductive and unhelpful as prog doesn't = bad.

I think there's a lot more crossover than you're willing to admit, especially when taking the truest meaning of the term 'progressive' rather than what people have come to think of prog as being (which is based on a movement from the bloody 70s).

That's what I was thinking, I thought I would throw some , for me, prog songs and he would prolly dissect it and say this and that to try and make the argument against it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78-vJwCVJvk is this prog? Because Im pretty sure it is too.

And yes, most Leprous is prog (I'd argue most of their recent stuff isn't though)

Actually, prog means a little more complex for me. This isn't about being elitist, I love music in general way too much.

In my head there is spectrum and the more simple music there, the more pop it is. And the more complicated it is, the more prog it is. This concept probably has some blind spots too, but aren't genre label for noobs anyway?
