Totally fair. I think Julien being depressing as hell also has something to do with it lol. Phoebe also has a bit more of a "presence" like online and whatnot, as opposed to Julien. None of those are hits against Julien btw, she's one of my favorite artists

"I forget how Phoebe is significantly more popular than Julien if Spotify streams are to be believed. Maybe it just has to do with replayability on Phoebe's part?"
lol dude Phoebe had a song with apple before she even put out music and that´s just one of her many connections

I still stand by the fact that this is incredibly similar to Shawn Colvin's "A Few Small Repairs" from 20 years earlier

Yeah Phoebe didn't come from nowhere. She's always been extremely well connected

it seems like julien pretty much did, though, right? (start from nowhere, i mean) and while phoebe has her own thing i definitely feel like the success of julien provided momentum for the 'sadgirl with guitar' vibe to be so sign-able in the second half of the last decade

I've always agreed with that sentiment, though I've also always wondered how true is really is. Artists like Regina Spektor and Laura Stevenson have been pumping out excellent releases for years, yet don't get credited half as often for driving the scene as Julien does.

This is probably the most ~Sputnikmusic~ take ever but I dont think any from boygenius, or soccer mommy, or snail mail, or julia jacklin, or whoever else, have put out anything as moving as Wheel or the Big Freeze. Kinda puts into perspective how much the industry machinery is responsible for launching these artists. If it came at a different time (or had a label like Dead Oceans' marketing team behind it) Cocksure could have been a way bigger album than it was I think too...

The vocal melody in the Kyoto chorus is kind of a curveball, it doesnt sound standard pop-rock at all to me tbh, and the horns and lyrics RULE
