I think Ulcerate and these guys go for very different things tbh

I can definitely see the similarities, but yeah I wouldn’t call them a clone or anything. It was a flippant response to the whole old school DM debate, it’s unclear why it was brought up in the first place. Not eulogising over this album doesn’t make you a naysayer of modern DM, nor does it make you a die hard OSDM enthusiast.

That was probably my fault cause of the "your fav must be 20 years old" quip, which was just a low-key dig some of the more geriatric characters on here, not you personally lol
|
| |
Jac it wasn't exactly a 'low-key' dig lol but i fully support it all the same

This discussion has inspired me to continue my ‘2nd phase’ DM binge which will probably include more modern stuff.

Scorched's new album is coming out this month. Check Echoes of Dismemberment if you havent, you sluts.

u never know whats gonna go down as a classic until it does
shit like obscura and close to a world below may be however old but they pushed the genre forwards and a lot of bands like ulcerate and this would sound very different (or possibly not exist at all) if those albums never happened
and obscura isnt even the best guts
but yea theres some modern dm that seems in strong contention for becoming classics. hell its prob the best time its ever been for unconventional dm
|
| |
that has very little to do with what i was saying but i agree with you for what its worth
|
| |
i think its fair to consider them both (and dozens of other bands) unconventional dm
in the same way that dso and zhrine are unconventional bm

Atheist are unconventional & they started in the 80s, it’s always been a part of DM (& any genre, really), forward thinking experimental artists are necessary to help keep the style fresh & interesting, otherwise we’d all just be listening to Scream Bloody Gore & Seven Churches clones forever.

there’s only really one indicator of classic status really
was it produced by colin marston

i feel like there's a chance ulcerate could release an album worse than their debut and if it were produced by marston id still like it more than shrines
