agree with all of Johnny's takes on the atmosphere on this and Marrow. i for one don't really feel like they're close in atmosphere at all

Anyway, goated band, best 4 album stretch in metal history, new album when

whoa lots of chat in here to catch up on, tis the season for Agalloch...

Ashes is easily my fave, with Serpent bringing up the rear. Marrow beats out both this and The Mantle currently, but I could do with a full revisit. My biggest takeaway from my time with this was how obstructively uneven it was (is?), kinda immersion breakingly so. It's sloppiness did have a certain charm to it tho and the highs delivered. I probably just failed to revisit it enough vs the 3 that came after, thinking about it

yeah, that Pillorian record was v good and a more satisfying conclusion than Serpent, even if it was going for something quite different (almost more fitting as a follow up to Marrow, perhaps). I don't revisit it much now tho, admittedly

don't sleep on Khorada, the rest of Agalloch with Giant Squid's frontman. their album was pretty solid too.

I was really let down by both side projects :/ but stoked I got to see Pillorian live as I thought they were the better of the two.

I mean, it was def not like Agalloch. Aaron John Gregory is an acquired taste for sure.

didn't say it was bad, just couldn't get into it. Pillorian on the other hand? When that dropped it was like an agonizing funeral (in the best way possible). Tears were shed, especially during Vestige and River

Yeah, the Pillorian record was pretty nice.

It still feels like it has to exude much more effort than pre-Serpent Agalloch, but it's definitely a much better entry in this sound.

half the tracks are absolute killers. The rest are solid. Way better send-off than Serpent or fucking Khorada.

I still want more.
