Right. If we ignore the rest of Death's later material for a minute what makes this less 'technical' than Human? I'm not trying to argue it is, I honestly don't know (not being a musician myself).

It's the rhythm section. On Human it has jazzy undertones a lot of the time. It also has more of those atmospheric moments that admittedly don't really indicate how proggy it is but are often interpreted as such (like "okay, this part is much more quiet than the one before, must be progressive - there's not as many moments on here compared to Human with, like you said, Cosmic Sea, and the beginning of Lack of Comprehension).
Low Life is one of my favorite Death songs btw

Ah right. I'll try & listen for the 'jazzy undertones' a little more in Human next time, from what I remember it doesn't sound too far removed from this record.
I can definitely hear the jazz influence in the ITP rhythm section which is why I was specifically asking about Human vs this.
Thanks, interesting.

Yes, it's way more in the foreground on ITP. That's why I called them "undertones"; they aren't undertones on ITP anymore, especially because of the striking use of fretless bass etc.
But in general I agree that this isn't as far from Human stylistically as popular opinion suggests. It's basically the bridge album between the two main eras of Death's sound

Yeah the bass on ITP is crazy, definitely a prominent feature of that album. I can see why you recommended this one next from a stylistic perspective... rather than SBG or Leprosy.

DM is on my pie, IT'S ON THE PIE! Bye, bye Hardcore (not sure why you were there anyway, Converge I guess). It's only about 5% off the overall lead as well.
I realise no-one else cares...

Nah, I can see where you're coming from. I'm still fighting the 30% prog metal to this day - they're only there because every metal band that isn't a narrow-minded genre bitch is automatically prog metal on here. Also, the band-centered genre tagging system sucks: Oh hey, Silence by Sonata Arctica, Spiritual Healing by Death and Heritage by Opeth are all the same genre, sure, why not?

This album is not one to compare to Human and beyond, but rather to Leprosy and SBG. It's a strong dm record.

It sounds like Human, I compare it to Human because it's the next Death record & the whole progressive era argument.
The riffs however, they're INHUMAN.

'I'm still fighting the 30% prog metal to this day'
This is going to be me one day, I can feel it. Everything metal-related seems to be tagged 'prog' so I get what you're saying. It certainly isn't perfect but I'm quite enjoying it, honestly. Very sad, I know.
