This album would've gotten a 4 from me if it weren't for the shitty filler tracks (My Deteriorating Incline, A Divine Eradication, Reversal, Vacant Mouth). Other than that, very solid album, although it absolutely pales in comparison to DTGL and LITSOS.
That's probably just me though. It seems Underoath went for a heavier sound with this record, and that was never really what I listened to them for. I liked their mix of hardcore with other genres, such as rock, alternative, ambient, etc., and the clean sections with Gillespie were better than Spencer's. Plus, it also seems that they went for a more chaotic sound, like in Vacant Mouth and A Divine Eradication, and I'm not a huge fan of that. To me, it's sort of just a bunch of noise, and it isn't entertaining in the slightest.
If I want heavy, I'll listen to August Burns Red, Oh Sleeper, Bring Me the Horizon (Believe it or not, their new album is actually quite enjoyable), etc. There are a million bands out there that are better at pure metal and heaviness than Underoath. Pos'd review.

Eh, I prefer Oh, Sleeper. They're much more skilled technically and especially lyrically. I do agree that they are better than BMTH.
However, my point is, these bands are much better at creating "heavy" music than Underoath. Underoath isn't that heavy compared to other metalcore bands.

heavy =/= better
"There are a million bands out there that are better at pure metal and heaviness than Underoath"
ummm when did they say they were trying to be the heaviest band in the world? I must have missed that

You guys obviously aren't understanding me. I never said Underoath was trying to be the heaviest band in the world, and I never said they have to be super heavy to be good. I love Underoath, and I like this album. All I'm saying is they're not as heavy as a lot of metalcore bands out there, and that is in no way a bad thing. What I meant is, for example, if I want to listen to a really heavy, headbanging inducing band, I'm going to listen to something heavier, such as August Burns Red, Oh Sleeper, etc.
Noww, for the love of God, stop being so fucking defensive.
EDIT-Oh, and the shot at Oh, Sleeper is real cool. Let's just degrade one of modern day's most technically proficient metalcore bands, why don't we?

this made me spit out some eggnog. you ruined my christmas spirit with your impossibly shitty remark

I've heard a million metalcore bands, many of whom are very good, and Oh, Sleeper is far more skilled technically than many of them. Maybe my remark was a bit over the top, but they definitely don't deserve the shit they're getting on this topic.
By the way, Waior, what do you think of this Underoath album? I'm curious, as your reviews are among the top I've seen on this site, and you make very valid points in all of them.
