I really don’t see the controversy, is there controversy? What are artists supposed to do? Everyone’s influenced by something, as long as you’re not denying that fact and attempting to pass off your work as entirely original, then what’s the issue?
Is there an expectation that every artist needs to release a disclaimer to accompany every piece of material, listing all their influences and giving praise/credit to them in a very public manner. Most artists are pretty honest about these things when asked.

Lol I am not virtue signalling shit, I am African. Also, there's influence and having music trace its roots somewhere (like rock and blues for example) and there's straight up ripping off other artists like Bryne did amd and pushed that shit like his own as a revolutionary. I find it nauseating. Paul Simon didn't appropriate shit with Graceland which happens to be one of my favourite albums OAT. It's clear everywhere where the influence in that music is coming from. The artists responsible for that style of music are obvious from interviews, live shows, etc.
Of course you could get away with the shit Bryne did a lot better in the 80s before the intenet"
