But back then they sounded like bad songwriters who weren't even all that technically impressive.

Plus, the lows you are talking about were god-awful.

wait a fucking minute. Sniper01, I looked at your ratings, not bad. But I saw one that intrigued me. Based on that, I can decide if you are an idiot or not. What would you give BTBAM's "Colors" out of 5?

Converge never gets old. It's pure artistic aggression. However, BTBAM tends to get a lil boring sometimes.

I have it at a 3, because I used to like it a lot, and something nostalgic about albums I used to like keeps me from lowering it more, but I think a 2.5 or a 3 is a pretty fair representation of how I feel about it.

BTBAM is great at first, but gets old after awhile. Still a really good band and far better than most metal today.

Converge, on the other hand, only get better with every listen. It's the same way with most post-metal, especially Isis, Neurosis, and Cult of Luna.

Isis and Cult of Luna are great, but Neurosis is fucking classic.

but you 5'd Frances the Mute... it makes no sense. You see, it goes like 60/40. 60 percent of the people on this site love BTBAM, obviously based on their ratings, but the other 40 say that the band is too much 'wank' and thus they are bad. Now, I see you were talking about the 'wank' factor of BTBAM before. While "Colors" IS a lot of 'wank', it's my one of my faves ever, and, the only album I think I;ve ever heard with more 'wank' and ridiculous 'instrumental masturbation' IS Frances the Mute. Now, I think when "musical masturbation" is handled well its awesome, but I think, that if you are going to talk about the 'wankyness' of Colors, you should re-listen to Frances. Not trying to start a fight, just my opinion.

Rosetta > Cult of Luna >> Isis (need to listen to Neurosis more properly).

Hollier- Once you do, I'll agree with your ranking, because it's going to look like this:

Neurosis>>Rosetta>Cult of Luna>>Isis.

I AGREE. Even though I'm not CRAZY about Rosetta thus far, and Ive only heard one album, they are much less boring and "OMFG WERE SO SLUDGY SO THATS GOOD" than Isis and Luna.

I honestly can't decide which band is better. Neurosis, Isis, and Cult of Luna are all on the same level for me. However, Neurosis does get a lot of credit since they've been going on since like '86 or something, unlike SOME OTHER BAND.

Cult of Luna needs a new album and to tour America.

I don't have any post-rock as a 5, but I have several post-metal 5's. That extra, heavier than hell dynamic just gets me.

This is a good point, but the reason I love Frances is that the songwriting makes the technicality fit in a way where every guitar part and style change fits together to make something that (to me at least) is a seamless and perfect listen. The tone and the feel of Frances makes it feel like an adventure, and the ambient parts give the album a sense of continuity that is severely lacking in BTBAM's music. When I listen to Frances, the reason it amazes me is that the crazy wanking only serves the purpose of heightening the sense of fear and uneasiness the slower parts build so beautifully, as opposed to BTBAM, where I feel like the point of the music IS those wanky parts. BTBAM = mindless wank, FtM = brilliant songwriting that happens to be filled with wank.
