The thing that pisses me off the most is that the album could have had such a noble ending, having much a bombastic and cheesy album in scope end of a touching, emotional note about how she's real in his heart and will live on forever, despite the tragedy.
I can imagine what you just described being absolutely awful and horribly cheesy. Finally Free was an excellent way to end the album, they could have so easily ruined the climax of the album by ending it with something as cringe worthy as The Spirit Carries On.

It doesn't always work in albums like tot but I think it's used great in panic attack. And it's a nice change of pace from the 4 snoozers that come before it. Not that they're bad, but panic attacks the first song that has some real energy
