I'm saying this because I have covered this album in its entirety. If I don't overload my amp with reverb, the tone doesn't sound right

"i love the tales of creation tone. such aggressive mids"

I second that. There is an entire story behind the production of "Tales". I remember reading in the band's official site about the making of "Tales". The band was desperately trying to figure out how to achieve the production design of their first two albums (the third was recorded solely by the band and Leif wasn't satisfied with the final result). It took them a lot of time to figure out where to record and find a producer who understood their vision.

First 4 albums are all varying levels of genius, but it will never get any better than Nightfall for me.

I'm always torn between Epicus and Nightfall. But I always lean towards their debut for sentimental reasons; it was the first C'mass album I heard, and I just love that this feels as it was recorded inside a castle or some sh*t. Nightfall might be more polished and well-rounded than this, but this album has literally no weak songs, it's rather astonishing. On the other hand, Nightfall has all these short instrumentals that don't add a huge deal, imo.

Hawks, what do you think of Solitude Aeturnus? Do you prefer them over the Swedes? Do you agree with the label "the American Candlemass"?

Ahhhh I like the instrumentals on Nightfall lol. They're not essential or anything, but they add some nice transitions.

Codex Gigas was probably the first C'mass song I jammed on my guitar, it's a cool little tune for sure!

yeah i appreciate nightfall and ancient dreams but they arent great albums to spin front to back, some serious filler tracks here and there. pity cuz, samarithan, bewitched, mirror mirror, and ancient dreams t/t are just some of the very best heavy metal songs ever recorded

Tales is a semi concept album which may explain why it has such a good flow...
