"pretentiousness and indulgence can be just as entertaining and lovely as any simple, heartfelt piece of music. "

yeah i agree. they may be pretentious but fuck me are they entertaining.

"You are boasting on about how pretentious they are, when they indeed have actually proven their worth and skill, makes you look like a pretty pretentious reviewer yourself, neh?"

neh. I never said that they didn't have worth or skill. they have bucket loads of both. pretentiousness is not mutually exclusive with those things.

because its entertaining, and when they do it right, demonstrates an interesting manipulation of musical style while throwing different melodies in a blender and sometimes coming up with great shit. De-Loused and Frances are both albums that show off a lot, but its entertaining and I enjoy the melodies they got out of it, the way the music was produced, and how cohesive it was for being so expansive. Unfortunately, after this they fell victim to just throwing shit together and over producing all their music making it a chore rather than a pleasure to listen to. Showing off can be boring, stupid, and overdone, or, cool, stylistic and interesting. This album fits into the latter category, and is a varied, intricate listen that may be too big for itself, but I enjoy it nonetheless.
