Pretty accessible album. It really succeeds in being ambient. Very chill.

Whenever I hear the opening notes of Xtal, I'm just made up. Love it.

I haven't spent anywhere near as much time with his other albums, but I don't see any of them ever touching this

^ Yeah, that P-string track was one of the hundreds of free and previously unreleased tracks he uploaded to his user18081971 account before he pulled everything down. It looks like it's going to see an official release on Nina Kraviz's new album 'When I was 14'.

Regarding SAW 1 it's also my least favorite Aphex album. Still enjoy it, but you can definitely tell some of these tracks were made by a 15-18 year old Richard who still had a lot of unrealized potential.

I feel like that's part of what makes the record so special, though... It isn't nearly as caught up in the technology as the later Aphex Twin releases. Here, there are no random sounds and effects coming from every which way; the ideas are pure, simple and beautiful, and are presented as such.

I think the same could be said, even more so in my opinion, in SAW II's case. But yeah, if you're into a more minimal approach I can see how this would be for certain people more so than for others. I just think it's a bit Aphex-lite. That doesn't mean there aren't tracks on here that I don't absolutely love, because there definitely are.
