It's not better, it's equally good though. It's colder and has a slightly different approach. Plus songs like Over, Humming, Undenied, Mourning Air, Cowboys are among their best work.

S/T hits the sweet spot between Dummy's easy listening and Third's dystopia.

I was going to accuse you of having Cowboys and Glory Box too low, then you realise just how damn consistent this band is. Machine Gun is one of my faves as well. The Rip is top 3. Love Wandering Star and of course Roads.

Impossible undertaking but Wandering Star would be up there for me too. So would Humming and Strangers and Machine Gun. It would completely tear me up though.

Machine Gun is insane, listened to it a load of times last week - max volume, still sounds like a nuclear strike during the Aphex Twin'y melty sine wave section and then the Terminator synth'y aftermath
No other song like it
Beth's vocals at the start are grim too

She’s like one of those birds at school who was 14yrs old and not a messer, came from a good home and yet her younger sister was expecting a baby.
Absolutely drained.

Mourning Air does go a little close to parody - it is so miserable and plodding even by Portishead standards
Also I always heard the first ‘Did I’ as ‘diddums’ lol
I do like it don’t get me wrong, but not a favourite.

All of s/t has a near-miserable noir atmosphere imo, that's the point

Not disputing but it’s my third least favourite after Half Day and Seven Months - although I might enjoy listening to Seven Months a little more sometimes
Every song here is strong though
