Kinda funny how Gore is taken down by its production and this one is raised by it. A song like 'This Link Is Dead' really drags but those bass thumbs in the verses sound so cool, and the instruments sound so massive that I don't even mind the song

Back half of this record...or lets say, from spell of math onward, saves this album from a normal 4 deftones record XD

The little interlude in Headless is one of the most gorgeous little soundscapes these guys have pulled together

I mean damn near everything this band has made is peak.
Ironically I love Gore and Ohms more than a few of their more fan favorite albums… tbh I think I like both more than Around the Fur and certainly Adrenaline and the S/T. private music is pretty easily their best since Koi for me tho.
Hope we get a follow up sooner rather than later, I cannot fucking believe this record is 5 years old. I hope they’re not done and I certainly hope I don’t have to wait until fucking 2030 for anything new from them. Id even be fine with them going the singles route if they don’t feel like dropping a whole new record.
Having said all that I reckon infinite source is probably gonna be the post release single? It’s the only other track they’re playing live…

I have a love-hate relationship with Radiant City. The chorus is killing the pace of the song.

I like Radiant City musically but Chino's 'Where's the ledge' bit annoys me lol

There are no outright terrible tracks here, which differentiates it from Gore, but Gore still had high highs, this has… what exactly? Title track is the only one I saved from here. The melodies and intensity both sound neutered on this release. It’s like they completely forgot how to write choruses or implement ambience into their music. Like compare the ambient bits of Mathematics and Pompeji to something like souvenir. souvenir has this really atmospheric closer with emotional payoff. There’s a melody that forms there that’s quietly affecting. On Mathematics they’re just like, “Fuck it, let’s just throw in like 3 minutes of finger snaps, and break it up with the main riff but do nothing with it”. Pompeji’s ambience does more, but it also ends up sounding incredibly nondescript and essentially adds nothing to the track.
This album gets worse over time for me, easily their worst right alongside Adrenaline and Gore. Hard 2–I just gotta find the time to review it, not that none of y’all can neg my reviews ;D

Lost interest at this part

These are some of Chino’s worst choruses but idk man everything else here is fine. The build in Genesis before the final chorus is one of their best moments instrumentally tbh

The choruses aren’t meant to be “pleasurable” in a traditional sense. It’s meant to tell a narrative/message. I respect the experimentation.
