his gf at the time, Oksana Grigorieva, had just had Gibson's child and then accused him of domestic violence and sent him to court over it. He admitted to slapping her to stop her because she was being rough holding the baby, shaking it and such. Public turned against him because of a racist phone recording convo he had with Oksana at the time. Oksana then broke an agreement by immediately going onto Howard Sterns show and talking about the case, which resulted in her charges being dropped.
Oksana says Gibson bruised the baby, which doesn't make sense because she also claims she wouldn't let him near the baby. More than likely the bruises were caused by her rough handling of the baby.
