missed the last page !
"But what that says to me is that you consider Tool's sound to be an indulgent snoozefest at the best of times."
for sure, and that's why it would still have ultimately me similarly if it had been a no-name debut
"if this was their debut album you'd only have this rated as a 3.0, but since it's actually the culmination of a three-decade five-album career you're knocking a full point off it"
i'm rating this a point lower than tool's other albums (bar 10000 days - will get there eventually) because it epitomises all their irritating qualities without having any of the mitigating factors (undertow's fierceness and darkness, lateralus' occasional dynamism, aenima's combo of both)
won't pretend otherwise - i dislike this band and would comfortably 2 their whole discography if i thought this was fair (i.e. cogent with my real opinion + experience), but i can't deny that those other three records have impressive moments that redeem them in a way that this does not.

As an ex-fan of Tool, I'd say the secret to successful communication regarding this band is not to argue at all with those who didn't 5 Lateralus, it's unfair, like playing chess against a blind person.

They'll come around, and yes, until then they'll keep screeching "boring!", "repetitive!" and "high-school band!" to mimic what they think is moral superiority.

The truth is that this band is so many levels above the rest is not even funny, so don't for a second believe the naysayers or you'll risk becoming a poser just like them.

Old angry Tool is much better tbh. This is just compositional wank that I happen to enjoy a lot.

I believe that point was made on a Sound Off before this had actually dropped, but it is certainly encouraging to see a throwback so soon after its release!
