Never got people calling this pretentious. I don't think it's necessarily on the same plane as animals or meddle but it's trailing just behind

But to explain in better detail without going into ~facebook immigration commenting~ tier of discussion
I don't like this because it's the ultimate in self-indulgence, thematically. Roger took advantage of the Pink Floyd name to put out two glorified solo albums that had no right being under the Pink Floyd banner and caused unnecessary friction between the other members just so he could put out an album with an incredibly clumsy plotline with The Wall; and an album that can be generalized with "war is bad, stop it" on this and so on. I feel no particular investment in Waters' experience because he doesn't make it convincing enough to a point where I'd give a damn. I don't feel it the same way you guys do, simple as that. Sorry if I was being a douche with the "muh dad" comment but that's what Roger's stuff from this period really comes across as being a lot, even if it was a constant throughout his career (and done better).

I won't say it's pretentious because it really isn't, although it is pretty self-indulgent at times (I'd know, considering I like self-indulgent shit)

Also Gilmour is a far more talented singer, his voice is like silk

that too, but I'll give Roger the edge here and say when he put emotion into his voice, it fucking did the job
I just don't get that with the post-Animals stuff, although it really doesn't help I don't like the post-Animals stuff and find it incredibly lifeless

Agreed, there were some great performances on the Wall but that one is drenched in pretentiousness as well, even if it's MUCH better
|

i mean, is it really pretentious though? seems like most things that venture out of the norm are automatically regarded as pretentious. self indulgent? sure, but for good reason: that album is a near masterpiece. i couldn't care less about how conceited waters is when he's making quality as solid as this.
thread makes me sad =[

"The Fletcher Memorial Home" is hands down one of the most pretentious works of music I've ever heard
That being said, it's one of the better songs on here
The closer is lovely too

Closer is fantastic yea. The songwriting on here just isn't consistently gripping enough to be as classic as The Wall or its predecessors tho, despite having many great songs and some really moving moments. This might also be Roger Waters's most grating singing performance, which is saying something.
