It was The Mantle and Solbrud's self titled for me, but it was Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk that was the first of this era that I really liked.

This and In Sorte Diaboli. My friend just gave me a stack of CDs (This, Dimmu, WASP, Arch Enemy, some others of varying quality) and was like "This is metal, bro. Do it."

I find it interesting that a lot of people got into BM becuase of this and A Blaze In The Northern Sky. They don't really seem like entry-level BM albums to me at all. My first BM band was like Dimmu Borgir or some shit.

This is entry-level black metal if you learn about the genre on Wikipedia.

picked up the 20th anniversary edition of this while i was out the other day, mainly out of curiosity to hear the second disc which has an alternative mix of the album from 1993 and some preproduction demos. The alternative mix is really worth a listen for anyone who fancies tracking it down, the drums and guitars are brought forward more and seem to have more density than the mix that was eventually released. Despite the difference it still manages to keep the frostbitten atmosphere that makes the album what it is.
