shower thought but kinda wonder if ohms dropping during peak-covid is part of the soured reception over time.
it most def inflated the praise it got upon release wonder if there is some unconscious over correction going on

That, plus people are willing to buy the return to form story. If a band puts out a few great albums in a row and then produces a dud, the following album often gets touted as a return to form if it shows even a modicum of promise or hints at improved quality
Even band members do this thing, where they retroactively seem to make up reasons for why X album sucked and how making this new one felt better. I still remember Chino saying in interviews how Ohms and the recording process reminded him of White Pony in many ways. Stuff like this just feeds into the hype and the story and unless the album is utter shit, people can delude themselves for a long time

Not saying there can't be legitimate reasons and friction behind the scenes in the recording of an album that may affect its quality, but two of their best albums (s/t and snw) were recorded when they were on the verge of breaking up, so obviously plenty of friction can exist while the end product remains of high standard

I felt the same after Gore and Ohms, hadn't even jammed their discography in 2-3 years, but this album reignited something in me and I am enjoying it immensely, for which I am grateful
It will probably settle at a 4 rating wise tho

Songs like Be Quiet And Drive are timeless, I enjoy that song as much today as I enjoyed it when I was 17.

This ain't a teens record and deftones ain't exactly a teens band. This timelessness sense is making them who they are now. Urgent and vintage at the same time

Am I insane for thinking Gore has more memorable moments than this
|

no. I actually agree with that. this did nothing for me. maybe just have to be in the mood for it kind of an album? gore is better in general. receives a lot of hate that I don’t think is necessarily deserved

Gore had more memorable moments than this in terms of knowing when to skip to the next song, or preferably to the next album.

"Not a bad album br />
This album is experimental. I appreciate that".
I just find it to be a watered down version within a pretty safe formular of their already existing sound. Nothing here sounds particular experimental to me.

It’s a 2.5 honestly.

I assumed the experimentation in the vocals were a smokescreen to mask the fact chino's pipes aren't what they used to be
But nothing about this is very experimental, or at least not notably more so than previous efforts
