This sits comfortably after Sabbath's first three records for me. A lot of the times though calling this a Sabbath record always felt awkward for me because it doesn't really sound anything like Black Sabbath. With the exception of the self-titled track. When I first heard this I thought it was a different band.. Ha, ah well; still classic.

The Sabbath sound is defined by Iommi's guitars not the vocals.

Well put. Sabotage is very different than Black Sabbath but nobody questions that album.

Iommi plays a huge role, defenitily, but without Ozzy it's hard for me to say it's a Sabbath record. That's just how Ive always felt about it. It was just a different era not hearing Ozzy on a Sabbath album after 8 records y'know? However, you are right about Sabotage that doesn't sound anything like their earlier output. To me the Sabbath sound has always been the first three records. Not to dismiss anything else that came afterwards because they're all great.

Ozzy's unique vocal delivery isn't an integral part of how Sabbath would sound? I know how important Iommi is to the band, but to say it's defined strictly by Iommi and not the vocals at all seems overblown to me. I wouldn't have one without the other and call it Black Sabbath. Opinions aside I still think this is a phenomenal record.

"The Sabbath sound is defined by Iommi's guitars not the vocals."
I agree to an extent but his guitar sound/approach is noticeably different here and the band as a whole changed and adapted their sound when Dio joined so I don't see that as a counter argument to this not sounding like 'the real' Sabbath.

true that, Ozzy needed the riffs to fit his vocal melodies (sometimes the riff was almost identical to his vox) while Dio was certainly more comfortable with having space and singing atop chords or in a different range than the guitar.

Dio is a better singer then Ozzy but Ozzy is the best for the band. When Dio sings Ozzys songs it's terrible

from what i've heard (Odeon and Live Evil), Dio gives a way better approach at songs like "Black Sabbath"
The band as a whole was better live with Dio, with Ozzy they are "cool" at best

If Tony & Geezer wanted to make a Heaven and Hell reunion, Rob would be a good choice for the vocals. Even though i know Tony wouldn't do it due to his health issues.
