'Mariner' was a good listen again...4th or 5th in my current ranking I think.
The one I really need to give more time to is the debut - loved the vocals and energy, dunno if the riffs/tunes were quite 'at it' to the necessary degree

Debut is easily weakest, I still enjoy it although I’m a bit of a fanboy so...
Mariner isn’t really comparable to other CoL to me, 2nd last if I have to rank it. It’s just a different beat altogether with Julie, very vocally focused, some of the instrumentation takes a backseat.

Yeah, mariner is on another level than every other CoL record. Just in the opposite direction.

What did you think to Eternal Kingdom Doof? Ghost Trail is a borderline top 5 CoL track and they added some really interesting elements, some of which you can still hear in their sound now.

I thought Eternal Kingdom might be their most Neurosis inspired, liked it a lot.
My opinions won't totally settle regarding their placings as favourites for a long time and most of these albums I've only listened to twice barring the new one and Mariner. Just listening to Vertikal now as I bailed out on my second listen of the new Opeth which I just can't stand.

Ghost trail is hard but that album is kinda meh aside from that
This is their best since highway by a slight margin imo, but nah debut beats all those

Lights on the Hill is the only song here that lives up to the hype.

‘The Beyond’ is amazing and worthy competition for this, or anything in their discog so far really. This is absolutely better then s/t and Vertikal though (plus Mariner for those who want to make the comparison). Undecided on this vs the rest, it’s closer to their best works than their worst though (not that they have any missteps).
Top 5 band of all time & one of the most consistent.

Vertikal I don't really get the approach too much - it's maybe my least favourite as stands

I’d put Vertikal in my top 3 (big fan of the way they integrated electronic elements), though it’s interchangeable because they have a very strong back catalogue. I remember years ago reading an interesting interview with Johannes, where he described how they achieved the massive sound on The Beyond. For dystopian heaviness and fury, that album is almost untouchable.

In theory implementing electronic elements into CoL’s core sound seems like a logistical nightmare, the fact they’re integrated so subtlety and tastefully is a testament to their proficiency as song-writers.

it's tasteful but it doesn't really service the compositions all that much - find it a bit window dressing'y
