I forget how Phoebe is significantly more popular than Julien if Spotify streams are to be believed. Maybe it just has to do with replayability on Phoebe's part?

I think Julien taps into more of the sad/acoustic/christian crowd, while Phoebe is more general indie folk/rock with probably better production? so yeah basically what Scoot said.
Oh the Conor Oberst connection obviously helps as well

Kyoto just seemed like a very standard upbeat pop-rock track and didn't wow me vocally. I'll try again though.

lumping Julien in with the crowd of boring acoustic folk about Christianity is a bit of a generalisation, given how much of her lyrics stem from the experience of being a religious queer woman (from the South no less!)

Yeah I always felt like Julien sang about her Christianity, not Christianity in general. Even knowing her background, I've never really considered her a "Christian artist"

yeah Julien is not exactly going to get lumped in a Hillsong worship playlist haha, her lyrics are wayyyy better than 99% of marketed-as-Christian music and just happen to explore Christian themes

yeah I completely agree, just trying to speculate on why Phoebe has reached a wider audience is all.
