This is the biggest grower in their discography in awhile. It's seemingly all over the place at first, but really nestles into the soul and shows its uniformity after awhile. Well you've done it again, National, made another masterpiece, while I was dreaming..

I feel like 'Dark Side of the Gym' doesn't get enough attention; that song is all kinds of gorgeous and awesome.
And cross-referencing here, but just like I loved how Brand New included Deja sounds on Science Fiction, I feel like there's a surprising amount of Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers vibes going on here. Both bands rule my life.

My prediction is this album will end up with a 3.9 average because the backlash is. all. too. real.
It really is.

Album is, unsurprisingly, growing on me. Seeing them next week and I can't wait to hear these tracks live. Absolute best band.

It took a while but I'll Still Destroy You has set in some serious hooks, definitely the one I've had in my head the most consistently since first listening to this. Kind of reminds me of Sufjan Stevens a bit. (Ironically this is their first album since Alligator that he didn't contribute to.)

I don't think it'll go below a 4. It'd be pretty lame if it did but currently it's at like 4.05 I think

It's a certified 5 for me - settling into my top 50 albums of all time
The flow of the first five tracks and the flow of the last four songs are both perfection.

I engage with the second half of this record far more than the first at this point. Day I Die, Born to Beg and Turtleneck just don't do it for me but I can still appreciate their status as solid National songs. Dark Side of the Gym is the only track on the record that I love, but hopefully more will join it in time.

This album is a bit more ballad-y than anything they've done before and I think that's a big part of the reason some people are taking issue with it. Personally, I love ballads, but it did take some getting used to. If I weren't as big a fan of the band as I am I definitely wouldn't have rated this so high or listened to it nearly as much as I have.
