I've never listened to a full A7X album but I remember their self-titled having a 2.5 average back when I joined in November 2009 - interesting to observe how its reputation has recovered over time.

I think they're a band that do too much craziness for some people, I think they took their fans aback and now that people can look back on it or join in without prior knowledge that they can look at it more objectively

it's interesting to compare this to blackstar as two records from revered artists that deal with death/loss in completely different ways. Bowie rages against the dying of the light, going out with theater, triumph and bombast - it's wistful but uplifting.
This, by contrast, is brutally, crushingly sad. there's no silver lining and no happy ending. i can't imagine how Cave must've felt when wringing these songs out of himself
