"some of the metal sections feel completely out of place and unwarranted, especially on Blackest Eyes"
although nowhere near as much as on "Russia on Ice", "No Part of Me" or "Ancestral".

The parts of FOABP where they try to sound like Meshuggah are especially out of place.

Stupid Dream is the best [2]. At least, out of the ones I've heard until now. I sort of stopped hearing the guys' discography after being overhyped, and ultimately a bit disappointed, by Deadwing and Lightbulb Sun.

It's pretty ironic that Steven Wilson made a comment against the loudness war in the album booklet, and yet this is a victim of the loudness war

That's the man. Remember him shitting on commercial muzak ("Piano Lessons", "Four Chords", "The Sound of Muzak") not long before putting out Blackfield's first two albums?
