Load isn't a bad album at all, if a different band had released it it wouldn't have been so reviled.
ReLoad is shite though, only a few good songs.
St. Anger would have been seen as okay if it was a flavor of the month nu metal band that did it and didn't have that shitty snare.

Well yeah, it's probably because of expectations. Metallica were kings in the late 80s/early 90s...so when they put up Load...a disappointing album...then ReLoad that was even worse, the fans felt betrayed.
The truth ? Load/ReLoad are pretty average. But when you know what Metallica is(/was) capable of...it's even more disappointing which explains the lower ratings.
(the review sums it up nicely:
My Metal Rating: 2/5
My Rock Rating: 4/5)
St Anger, however, is one of the worst metal albums i've heard. Frantic tick tick tick tick tick tick tock? Wtf ? I don't usually care much about the lyrics (i mean, i like Annihilator) but when it sounds like this... it's too much for me. And the drums, which never were the strongest part in Metallica, are at their worst (Lars isn't the most skilled drummer but he can still do much better).

How does that sum it up nicely? That's a retarded way of looking at an album.

In comparison to previous Metallica, it's about a 2/5 agreed. This isn't really metal, but I think you mean in terms of this being from the same band that brought us Ride the Lightening and Master of Puppets, this is basically a joke. In terms of a regular rock album, this is pretty great, though.

@DarkSideOfLucca: Exactly. It's not a bad rock album, it's pretty enjoyable.
@JamieTwort: No it's not. It's another way than the one you use...no reason to call people retarded because you do things differently. People were disappointed because this isn't metal. I sure was. Hence the low rating.
Imagine going to the sequel of a movie...say The Lord of The Rings. In this movie, however, they turned it into a romance comedy and removed all the fantasy parts. Still the same cast, still the same director...totally different thing. You were expecting the sequel...you're getting something else. You're going to be disappointed. Someone who went in there not knowing what it was might enjoy it, though.

Yall are acting like the black album never existed and this came out in 89 right after ajfa

Fair point. I did enjoy the black album, myself (rated it a 3.5 here). But i still wanted Load to be more metal than the black album which it certainly wasn't. And the quality of the songs on the black album is better than on this, even though it was pretty inconsistent.
I didn't like And Justice For All since it was, in my opinion, a half assed effort. It's like they wanted to be both metal and rock at the same time and it just didn't work for me. Kill'em'all, Ride the lightning and Master of Puppets are great albums. Ride the lightning is one of my favorite albums ever...so yeah. I wish they had stayed true to their roots.
I don't mind the occasional "original" album. Megadeth, for instance, has been pretty inconsistent with their(/his) releases... but always came back to its thrash roots.
Metallica started off great then it all went downhill after ride the lightning. A long and slow freefall toward pop/rock(it took 4 albums to reach the bottom...then they managed to do even worse with ReLoad and St Anger).
I can totally understand liking it, though...especially when you're not a fan of thrash or just not expecting it. But to me, Metallica will always mean Kill'em'all/Ride the Lightning/Master of Puppets.
