I think Gira mentioned it was one of Jarboe's father's FBI recordings, but never went into the direct context other than that "the person is obviously aware of the tape, and he’s also some kind of criminal".

Didn't they destroy a bunch of the tapes after they finished the album?

Yeah, this album was an impetus to seek out and use various material from tapes recorded throughout the 80s and 90s by Gira

Saw these guys live a week ago or so. Absolutely life changing. Best live show I've ever been on. I cried like a baby on certain tracks. The stuff from The Glowing Man was amazing.

Pretty much never see anyone mention Mellothumb, but I absolutely love how the sombre chords at the start get completely swallowed up by the cavernous ambience

Yeah that ambience in Mellothumb is creepy and otherworldly. Also Surrogate 2 really nails that eerie vibe in such a short time.

I love how when I keep listening to this I recognize reused tape loops, like the low rumble in Volcano and I Love You This Much, the beginning drone of Helpless Child being used near the end of Minus Something, that weird lower kinda suction-y noise near the end of (as well as one of the opening drone noises) in I Was A Prisoner In Your Skull used again in The Beautiful Days, the drone fading in a bit less than two minutes into Mellothumb being reused in the intro to How They Suffer, and probably other examples I haven't even caught yet. What an amazing album.

Rumbles, suction-y noises, drone, reused tape loops.

Yep it really is that shit.

Yeah, it's amazing. And it takes a while to figure it out, as well. There is occasionally cohesion despite of how sporadic a lot of the material might seem.

Btw, I think it's Jarboe with her voice modulated on The Beautiful Days and Minus Something. It matches the cadence and pronunciation she usually has.

It is, and the kid sample is a very young Jarboe in fact.
