The bands aren't really that similar. Kyuss's sound is very groovy, with fuzzy riffs and psychedelia taking the forefront. Whereas QOTSA is more along the lines of alt-rock with more of the focus being put on Josh Homme's vocals. So yeah there is a chance you'll dig this even if you don't like QOTSA

I'm not sure I'd agree with Kyuss being better. They're different kinds of rock, and I find both to be amazing. I find the guitar work in QOTSA to be more innovative, and there's more variety, but I guess you could say Kyuss rocks harder.
