Good album. Snakes for Dinner is a lovely ode to Brent.

I haven't listened to this yet, but I'm terrified I'm going to give it a full spin and realize that Brent Hinds was the indecipherable 'x-factor' behind my enjoyment of the band, and from there realize there's absolutely no way I'll be able to keep listening to them past this.

I listened to both of the singles and for some reason neither resonated with me at all. I don't know why.

He kinda checked out on the songwriting front after CtS and every album since has just reinforced the theory that Brann and Brent together made Mastodon my all-time fave. Since then they've still made some excellent music, but Hercules is mortal.

Out on a Lamb, Moth and Bone, and the Vanishing are def the three biggest highlights to me after listening to this today. Moth and Bone has to be one of the most surprisingly catchy songs they've written thanks to the keyboards on it.

Hushed and grim is decent but I never thought it was anything special. This on other hand is prob top 3 mastodon along with crack the skye and Leviathan after spinning it all day. Maybe 4th after blood mountain but it's easy top S tier album mastodon

Album's good from start to finish without any clearly weaker tracks but at the same time it has no big stand out moments either.

Nothing here comes close to their classic stuff like Sleeping Giant, The Czar, Hearts Alive, Crystall Skull etc

It's probably another 3-3.5 post-CTS Mastodon album imo

i agree with this tbh. this is better than H&G i think, but that album had some spectacular tracks on it. this just stays at a consistent quality.
