you like this more than nightside eclipse?

definitely. i really like the atmosphere this has and the production is nuts.

i still love nightside though - inno a satana is still one of my favourite songs

I feel bad for this album, I'd definitely like it more if it wasn't in Emperor's discography. My bias leaves this album at a 4 :/

Good review, but I disagree at one point, The tongue of fire. The track is essential in this album's
concept of birth to death.

I love the progressive nature of this album together with the black metal. The clean production
really benefits this album too, since you can hear that this album has a lot of complexity.

The album is definitely a grower, it needs a decent amount of listens to fully appreciate it.

Favourite tracks: The Eruption, Depraved, The Tongue of Fire and Thorns On My Grave.

Thorns On My Grave is such a fitting swan song for the band.

Evidently more experimental than Emperor's previous albums, but none of the intense atmosphere which made those albums has been lost, rather built on to include more complex compositions. Highlights for me would be "Empty", "The Tongue of Fire" and "He who sought the Fire".

An interesting album to finish a band's career with. I wonder what Emperor would have done with this

sound had they not disbanded.

It was pretty much just an Ihsahn solo project by this point

Yeah, Samoth even said this about it: ''This is no doubt the most progressive Emperor album to date and was really Ihsahn's brainchild.''

Album gets lost in the mix because of the first 2 classics, but holy fuck does it slay.

Hell even IX Equilibrium is great. Not as good as this one, but still a solid 4.
