"I can’t think of a more disappointing album release than bringing the resistance home on CD after work when it released and slowly realising it was actually shit. They really never got it back after that one."
Me too. The only redeeming thing record on that is the last three orchestral songs. Those were awesome.

Nah... The Resistance was ace. Sounded heaps more fresh and inspired than half of BH&R. I loved it back in the day. That said, it marked the beginning of (what I thought was until now) the end.

black holes has higher highs and lower lows. still a solid half of this album is peak muse and i never thought I’d ever hear peak muse again
|

Curious what everyone considers the low points on Black Holes.
It’s 100% nostalgia but that album is one of their most consistent in my eyes.
|
| |
Damn, this is actually good then? I was expecting another dud.
|
| |
Low point on Black Holes for me is Invincible and that’s about it. Thought it was peak cheese at the time but it was only the tip of the cheeseburg that was to come :D

soldier’s poem is the only real low for me and it’s not even bad. black holes has some of their most underrated songs i.e. take a bow, exo-politics, city of delusion, hoodoo
if only assassin were the grand omega bosses edit then it might be able to compete with origin and absolution

For me, Invincible is awful, and the run from Soldier's Poem to Hoodoo sounds flat and uninspired, with the possible exception of Assassin which is at least awesome live. It was the first Muse album that didn't sound bigger and better than the last one.

I remember enjoying Invincible at first, but when they tried to recreate that song like 4 times across the next 3 albums, I started to hate it by association.

I like everything on Black Holes and actually prefer that album over Absolution *shrug*

I think Absolution is peak Muse -- the best album of their careers and also one of the best rock records of the 2000s. BHAR isn't far behind, though.

5/5: Drones > Origin
4.5/5: BHAR > Absolution
4/5: Wow! > Showbiz = 2nd Law > WOTP
3.5/5: -
3/5: Resistance > Sim Theory
The lower ratings/rankings are subject to change, a few I haven't listened to in a long time. I actually think WOTP is more consistent than either SB or T2L, but the former's title track is their best song and "Survival" is top 10, so...

A good Muse album? In this economy?!

I had to kind of redo my Muse ratings just now because they are outdated, but here's my rough take:
5/5 - Absolution
4.5/5 - Origin of Symmetry > Black Holes = Wow Signal
4/5 - Drones = Showbiz
2.5 or below (in no particular order because they're all pretty bad) - The Resistance, Will of the People, The 2nd Law, Simulation Theory

3.9 average is insane to me, these guys have never been very good and this is about the same as everything else they ever did??

The line cook at my job is obsessed with this band and I said I’d eat my shoe if this record was good… are you fuckers telling me this record isn’t just good but damn good??
Maybe wear sandals that day. Less material.

Damn, someone who loves Drones too. Even more than I do.
4.5: origin of symmetry > Absolution
4: Black Holes > Drones (pretty equal though)
3.5: The Wow Theory (very early rating) > Simulation Theory
3: Showbiz > The Resistance (thought I had this lower — need to re-listen)
2.5: Will of the People (def need to re-listen, don’t remember a thing) > The 2nd Law

Drones has some phenomenal songs (Reapers, The Handler, Defector). I didn't appreciate the whole album when I reviewed it in 2015 the same way I do now. It's still comfortably below Absolution, OoS, BHAR, and Wow! Signal however. Probably also below Showbiz but I put them in a similar tier anyway because while Showbiz is prob actually better, I listen to Drones way more.

Basically, I view Drones as the worst of their actually competent albums
