death metal have evolved so much since it started. really the classics share little in common with super speedy wank tech death. tech death has always been about pushing boundaries and progressing, so it actually tracks to be more influenced by modern stuff instead of classic dm.

I can respect how tough it is to play stuff like this, but i definitely prefer stuff 90s stuff like suffocation/morbid angel because those bands still know how to groove. Pretty much all speed and wank with bands like this

This type of death metal is indeed quite far removed from old school death metal of the likes of Morbid Angel, Autopsy, Incantation etc.

I personally don't give a rat's ass what Dean knows and listens to as long as his music is good, which it is. This music critic bs needs to stop.

+ this thread makes me sad. Love or hate their music, these guys are crazy talented, wholesome and deserving of more praise.

Eh, I dunno maybe I'm just old (I am) but I think the classics had so much more fucking heart and genuine ideas than most of the tech death bands that just jerk off to how complicated they can be.

Obviously there are some exceptions, like these guys, Psycroptic, Spawn of Posession, etc

But my main jam will always be Morbid Angel, Suffocation, Dying Fetus, Death, Entombed, etc

That one bell curve meme kind of works for metalhead's relationship to tech death where it can be an entry point to extreme music but then they stop liking it because wank and then eventually you settle back to liking it again.

not an archspire hater but I really can't see myself getting back into hyper-clean pristine tech death, despite liking their previous albums. I want to revel in filth and misery lol.

Yeah, tech bands tend not to have much of that crushing gross atmosphere that I come here for

also @jr, brutal death metal rules precisesly because there's no clear sense of structure. you can listen to the same album for the first time like ten times.

With modern tech death, adding that sort of atmosphere seems like mixing oil and water. The band probably wants the clarity of the instruments to come through since there's a lot of nuance happening that is smothered if you dirty the track up too much.

Limb of Leviticus sounds pretty filthy to me, especially as all the elements swell into the final chorus. But if you want grit and grime, you gotta slow down. Which isn't something I expect of a band who is literally designing an album with speed at the forefront.

@futures

Brother, necrophagist is legendary though. That man was a classical riff master and on a whole different level to the point that pretty much all modern tech death pays homage to Mr. Muhammed. A lot of these modern tech death bands have boring riffs and are held up by amazing drumming. Necrophagist had both
