This is super cool, but even just playing this with the lights low/off is great.

i went back and relistened to magic opn and age of and i just can't get into them at all. i was totally ready to board the dehype train on this because i think lopatin has been putting out a lot of deliberately abrasive, collagy postmodern art shit over the years and it's not my vibe. very showy, very glitchy, very art-student-like.

this is his first album in ages to fully commit to a coherent sonic world again. it's like he said, "alrght, enough fucking around; let's make a REAL album again." the whole thing flows perfectly and feels like an organic digital world. it's lush and spacious and beautiful and consistent--and it reminds me of other eletronic masterpieces that conjure these big dreamlike worlds, like secede's tryshasla, or boards of canada's tomorrow's harvest. it does the same thing as albums like those and creates its own distinct-sounding sonic ecosystem, and sounds more rooted in memory, not just some performative software demo.
