is that a real gyro 5? lol, damn

enjoying what I've experienced thus far but admittedly got distracted / haven't been in a huge Veil mood as I burned (hehe) out on them in the lead-up, like a proper amateur

I have no issue with their vox (generally appreciate them) and the drum machine isn't a deal-breaker, so I'm expecting the consonance-outta-dissonance riffs to shine thru eventually

Had no idea that drums were programmed. I'm hoping this will be a grower like Duality was. First impression was really good and I actually think this is a more listenable album than the last although the 7-minute gimmick was an interesting little self-test the band imposed on themselves. The new one seems to be leaning more on dissonance rather than groove. Can't say there's been a "Shadow of a Shadow" moment for me yet, but I plan to give this a few more passes. Great review, as always, Hawks. I get the sense Veilburner came out of nowhere for you last year and you've caught feelings.

Thanks bro! You're definitely right about this being more listenable and you're also correct about my love affair with this band lmao.

Yeah, this is really unique and special... I am not sure yet how much I actually love it, but it is a n intriguing listen.

I don't hear much dissonance, I would reather call it weirdo Black than Disso Black

Glad you dig it! Its definitely dissoblack though lol. Maybe not in terms of like DSO/BAN type of dissoblack, but still lol.

is it really dissonant? I don't really think so... it is weird, but the wierdness is more on overall structures and combinations of riffs and beats and sequences of parts. I don't think it has a lot of dissonance. But well, in the end who cares, as long as it is engaging and a fun listen?

I think a lot of the riffage is super dissonant in nature. Definitely lots of influences here though, not just dissoblack. Its just as much avant-garde metal as it is bm, maybe more tbh. Definitely agree with your last point though, album kills. M/////

Think it really depends on what you're comparing it to. First blush tells me there's a lot of intention in creating a disconcerting atmosphere. If dissonance is simply a set of sounds that create a nervous or uncomfortable disposition in the listener, then I'd say the album qualifies.

Folks were pointing our metal's tendency towards dissonance as long ago as Sabbath.

musically great, creative and killer vox but sadly feel the same as beardog and hype on this one about the production. this desperately needs a raw edge imo it doesn’t suit the style here. the programmed drums sound like they came straight off the shelf. hate how fake the snare rolls sound in particular. dayum shame because everything else about this rules

I've had the opening of "Ouroboreal Whorl" stuck in my head all day. Having heard "Shadow Portrait" as a single, hearing it resolve into "Whorl" was an 'o fuk' moment on my first couple listens.

The song as a whole might be the album's best, though it's got stiff competition with "That Which Crypts" hmmmm

Yeah, genuinely mindblowing album. A lot of avant-extreme bands can make a bunch of noise, but these guys thread hooks into all the insanity. Somehow surreal and fucking weird as hell while also being very catchy
