I'm mostly just busting balls. I'm a YC stan so I know all the lyrics inside and out. Most people don't so you're firmly in the normal person camp, haha.

this is pretty mid

This isn't bad, and the production is definitely better than what Travis managed on his own band's last album. I like Take What You Want, Love Letters Lost, Honestly I, and Skin Scraped. The rest is still good, but it's too sentimental power pop punk ballad for my cynical heart.

the mix might be a bit better (although I'm not even convinced of that, he clearly has no idea how to mix the violin which is like a basic requirement for a Yellowcard producer) but as far as actually getting the best out of the band he cleared this on OMT. nothing here on par with Turpentine or Bad News

@Willie: I can definitely see the "too sentimental pop punk ballad" in the Avril song. Glad you enjoyed it overall.

I like that song, though. Probably just the novelty of having a good song with Avril on it. It's all the other similar songs with similar themes that don't really speak to me as much.

The production problems really stand out when you revisit lights and sounds/paper walls. Those albums nailed the yellowcard production.

Don't hear any prod issues on this, although I've been exclusively listening through speakers.

Singles are my fav tracks here - opener, Honestly I, Avril track and Bedroom Posters

this is kinda mid so far other than the Avril track and take what you want. pretty easily their weakest record apart from that weird hammock collab

yeah okay there's some pretty neat stuff here mixed with some pure mid and the production is lifeless per travis barker in 2020s usual fare

@Sowing Oh yeah, that definitely makes me hate the cover less. Maybe if they had used like an old slightly over-exposed-by-flash photo of his son seated at the piano or something like that the idea would've come across more clearly.
I would say I've enjoyed most of the songs equally with one or two exceptions (after multiple times listening through the album, I still can't recall a line or riff from Skin Scraped). Love Letters lost, Bedroom Posters, and Barely Alive have been stuck in my head as of late!

@Sowing: It's been a while but if you don't mind me asking, what would your current album rankings be, and where would this album fit in for you?

@3waycrash:
Since I've had almost two months to digest, I'd say it goes:
Southern Air
Ocean Avenue
Yellowcard
Paper Walls
WYTTSY
Better Days
Lights and Sounds
Lift a Sail
One for the Kids
Where We Stand
Midget Tossing
If you're including EPs then Childhood Eyes would slot in right around WYTTSY

And chalk a lot of the ranking up to nostalgia, which this hasn't had a chance to accrue yet. It could probably leapfrog or tie WYTTSY eventually.
This album's aim is clearly to be a mainstream hit, and while I prefer the more nuanced YC songwriting with personal lyrics, this is definitely a straight 5/5 banger in terms of catchiness. Their biggest mistake IMO was not releasing this during the US summer. This would have been spun on repeat with the windows down all season long from June to September. YC has never been a band that syncs up with fall/winter.

Thanks for sharing! And I definitely agree with a lot that you said. Think I like their more nuanced side too, not that they're ever super super deep, but this one is on the more simplified side. Not that that's a bad thing to keep it straightforward. There's still more than enough great lines and earnestness that shines through. Think it ranks somewhere middle of the pack for me which is still good considering how I feel about their discography already.
Oh yeah, this one screams pop punk summer, not necessarily October/fall. But I did listen to it a lot on vacation in California during the time so it kind of worked out for me personally lol. Like we talked about, their music just has a way with connecting with memorable, personal moments in your life.
I think the closest thing I've felt is Lights and Sounds and Lift a Sail as more "fall-y" albums. L&S with it's more moody, cloudy/grey sound and tone, and LaS with some of its more experimental, electronic elements for a cooler tone and slower pace. Two of their more alternative rock, less pop punky albums if that makes sense, but maybe that's just me. All in all I think like most fans we're just happy to have them back and still in good shape.
