This is full on Goth rock in the vain of Sisters of Mercy and I'm loving this so far.

So in the discord q&a yesterday, Jade said that they began writing the next record during the same sessions that produced Silver Bleeds the Black Sun. So (he didn't say this part) we may get more relatively soon.

Also, the fact that this album title ends with '...' may tease a follow-on companion album.

It sucks. What the fuck are those vocals?

Vocals are the highlight for me, just need them to experiment more musically.

"So as someone who only listened to STS and backwards, is this a total 180 in experimentation? This sounds like it would have been groundbreaking if it was released in the 80s so idk what the hell they’re doing here lol"
definitely a 180 from STS, but they've been moving in this direction for a while. this is like the culmination of the sounds they've been experimenting with on the last 3 albums (Burials, s/t, Bodies) in particular.

yeah, Davey’s vocals are the best they’ve been since the 2000s tbh and easily the most interesting too.
can’t get over his (the whole band’s) performance on Nooneunderground. what a fucking legend. 2nd fave song this year

I think Davey could pull of a Bowie Blackstar type of record really well. Just lean into those eerie synths a bit more and stop the standard post punk drumming.

Im not a fan of everything he does vocally on this, but that said, i must admit he sounds pretty damn good whatever kinda of style or vibe he leans into on this, it being his usual high voice or his lower register

If they weren't gonna make Black Sails 2.0, this is kinda exactly what I wanted a modern AFI album to sound like. Blasphemy and Spear of Truth are the only two songs that idk... as of right now, imo are just fine but the rest is straight up spooky boi bangerz.
Sowing, the straight forward post-punk drumming kinda idk it makes me wanna dance like the south park goth kids so it just vibes. Obviously they're capable of more complex stuff but idk, I do get your point and respectfully disagree. Other than that, i'm with you. And to your point in the review, I think the 2 songs I didn't "love" are for the same (I think) reasons you mentioned. Bird of Prey was awesome but those just felt like more of that. I do like how this album feels way more cohesive tho compared to the past 2 decades.

Yeah this isn’t bad or anything. Just nothing original here and an old sound but it’s a pretty pleasant jam.

Doesn't Nooneunderground share some Dead Kennedys DNA or am i crazy? First 3 songs and last 2 are a blast. From the others, at least for now, VOIDWARD is great.

@blaze: I am glad you're digging this! I certainly get the spooky dance vibes, and maybe I'll bump up my score for this if that mood catches me right in the future. Generally speaking though, I'm more a fan of their dark punk stuff. While I don't expect a return to that style at this point in their careers, I wouldn't mind seeing more nuanced rock like Behind the Clock spread out across an entire record. Either way, I agree this is more promising of a direction for them compared to other recent output!

Missing Man reigns supreme for me in their Post-Burials output (Blood/Bodies/This). It may benefit from the brevity though because I feel you could have great eps trimming down each of those 3 releases into 5 track eps.

I think this just edges out missing man for me atm but that could be recency bias. minus Nooneunderground, I like my faves on there more than everything here but i just really like the package here as a whole

I like The Missing Man, it definitely evokes some older AFI vibes, but I actually place it relatively low on the post-STS rankings.
I'm really not sure where to place this record. It's so different in the atmosphere it brings. Still digesting. Very thankful for another great addition to their discography. Forever love this band.
