I thought this was enjoyable overall. “Glum” was the only track I truly disliked (tf was she thinking with those pitch-shifted vocals??), but only a couple songs left a lasting impression. “Parachute” is clearly the standout track. The majority of it struck me as solid but unspectacular indie pop.

Incredible album
Brotherly Hate could have been left off tho

I feel like this (and her solo debut honestly) is a case of where the album could've possibly been in the 5 range if certain lesser tracks were cut. I keep going back and forth between 4 and 4.5 for this one.

I like Brotherly Love, and the other 'lesser tracks' -ones I perceive as being anyway, for the variety they provide to the album.
So i'd keep them all.
Sure some aren't as strong, but they're still pretty cool, i don't think they detract. The strong songs are still there, it just adds more variety for mine.

Discovery Channel is the easy weak point for me, what a snoozer. OJ has finally started to grow on me recently though it's still not opening track material

Maaan I love Discovery Channel lol. It has such a heavy, melancholy feel to it that's unique from anything else on the album.

Agree, Discovery Channel is great.
The verse reminds me of bands like Hole and Veruca Salt or the aussie band magic dirt. Very 90's sounding.
the bridge reminds me a lot of tegan and sara.
But yeah its just the mood, and the chorus works - even though i hate the song its actually lifted from.

Only downside is a keep subconsciously expecting her to say "getting horny now" after each chorus like in the original.

Agreed, Parachute's inclusion as a proper closer was a very welcome one.

You were at my wedding, I was broken, you were drunk
You could've told me not to do it, I would've run, I would've run
Tell me what was the moment, you decided to give up
You could've told me what you wanted, I would've done, I would've done
Anything, I would've done anything
The way she sings this whole part gives me chills every time

Ugh, I know.
And I don't normally like to speculate about the future of bands/artists, but I'd be really truly surprised if Paramore continues in their current lineup any longer. I feel like Taylor York's either gonna step away, or the band will just call it quits altogether. Can't say I'll be surprised if it happens, but man it'll be heartbreaking.

she did just say in an interview Paramore's not done but they're on break

Yeah I read that in an article as well. Honestly, I'm okay with it because she's killing it solo. I do appreciate the balance between rockier/punkier stuff and her solo work though, so if Paramore drops something several years from now, I'll still be happy.

I must admit I find myself singing that line every now and then haha

Anyone think Bloodhound Gang is getting any royalties?

it's an interesting record in terms that it shows how she writes without her bandmates. the songs do not really go anywhere musically, just staying in the same key and harmony all the time, basically no bridges, no interludes or modulations that would bring an element of surprise. so for me it's a boring record. and i really got tired at this point of her depression and breakups cause it seems like she needs them to write and get inspired.

Unless you're after prog music, I think the music goes as far as most songs do tbh.
Or in other words, i don't agree that it doesn't go anywhere musically, (if you consider that it isnt prog orientated mysic) I think it's quite varied, many of the songs most definitely do have bridges.
There are some shorter simpler tunes, but that's just it, the surprise for me is that they aren't all paramore sounding rock tunes.
I think there's some real quality songwriting here, including the shorter more straight forward tunes. Some good, interesting choice harmony styles. Theres more going on than meets the eye i feel.

wow a "woman songwriter bad for writing about breakups" comment in 2025. like seeing a unicorn

while i hate to say it, i do agree that there are times where you feel like the massive chorus is coming and then it just isn't there, which is not bad per se, but the album did felt like it never broke the tension that the songs are building up to, Something i feel boygenius (a band that is pretty much on the same vein of what she is going for here) did manage and made The Record all the better for it, either way im really digging this.
