think portnoy is especially essential to dream theater because unlike petrucci and rudess who are essentially machines... you can really feel the strain in portnoy's playing in the parts where he's "going for it". adds a human element that they don't really have otherwise

There’s some pretty good stuff here and Portnoy’s drumming is definitely a welcome return, but on the whole I’d take Dramatic Turn or Distance Over Time over this

Wait, this came out? And it’s good??? Jamming right now.

Also just going to say that the Portnoy vs. Mangini discourse I’ve seen online is absurd. Mangini is an excellent musician, but he was clearly not given the room to contribute much creatively. Portnoy, more than any other member in the band’s history, is the soul of the band. There’s really no comparison.

Agreed again.

About half way through this and I gotta say it’s their best sounding album since Black Clouds, definitely dark heavy and brooding too, maybe not as colorful as some of the Mangini-era stuff though for sake of comparison. Very 00’s era DT

I could do without the epic at the end atm, but it may be a grower. It's better than AVFTTOTW though

LaBrie really is probably the worst vocalist of all time

Nah, the first two DT records he sang on are amazing, for a large part due to how good his vocals were.

Ok, yeah, I think I agree that it’s a 4, shockingly. There’s definitely cheese here, but they manage to keep it at bay enough that it’s focused and well-crafted throughout. I’m impressed. Black Clouds still beats it by a hair, though.

This might be the weakest DT epic. I like the solos though

Yeah this is basically a more focussed Black Clouds. Less cringe, but also lesser highs.

Bend the Clock is an excellent jam. I am really enjoying this album after a full listen and I am about to give it a rewind. It's not just that Portnoy is back, the whole band seems to be putting in a little more creativity and feel to the music than the last couple albums. Excited to spin this for awhile

Shit, am I going to have to do a discography run of this band now? I can't tell if this is actually better than their recent output or if I've just been so turned off to them for so long that this sounds different.

Idk man it really does not sound creative to me at all, it really is just Black Clouds but a bit more boring. But it's not bad at all

The Astonishing is their only truly bad album. Everything else is at least worth a listen
