His growls are still pretty great, especially considering he's been doing it for the past 30+ years

One thing I found strange about this album, even more so since it is a concept album, is they decided it was necessary to use a fade-out three (?????) times! Kind of strange.

I have to say that's some solid decision making there

But seriously, those fade-outs kind of ruin the flow of this one for me.
Suuuper strange decision for a concept album. They've kept those grooves going for long times in the past, why not do it now and make them into a satisfying conclusion, rather than fade out endings almost half of the time (3 out of 7 tunes!).

I am really really enjoying the new drummer

this has not yet clicked for me. It's kinda overdramatic in execution and not really focused on building captivating songs. feels more like a performed musical in that sense. still finding a lot to like but nothing that completely floors me like the run from mayh to watershed did

excessive dramatisation is certainly not something I would ever use as a critique for these guys, especially not as a long term fan - they've kinda always been a bit like that, no?
maybe it's the additional bells and whistles with the prog elements being slightly more symphonic(?) idk just speculating
Watershed as a (somewhat valid) comparison point is hella dramatic, over-the-top and sort of ridiculous, lol

watershed poops all over this
it's a way more focused and coherent piece of work than this prog soup for the hoi polloi
|
| |
i think fr me its the vocals that come of as more melodramatic the most. the instrumentation with all the symphonic elements as well. I mean, sure they've always been thetralic but in their glory days they managed to evoke more emotions with their toolbox. but here, there seem to be so many different parts and things in the songs going on that everything kinda just blurs together. but maybe it's just me and I need to give it some more spins.
