Tbh, I find this to be barely better than Sorceress. Outro is my highlight but it's also the most self-plagiarized. Like a 3.3

Mixing elements of Watershed with 2000s Dream Theater isn't exactly what I needed from new Opeth, but still lots of good moments despite being probably my least fav from them. Will hopefully grow a bit on repeated listens. I don't really think this brings back their classic prog metal soundscapes, it's pretty much as wonky and stoppy-starty as Sorceress to me but more metal-tinged. 3.1-3.4 range for me atm.

I've listen to this heading work and walking the dog. I haven't done the finale yet. Good stuff. In Cauda grew on .e

Closer here and on ICV sound a little too similar, though I don't hate them on their own.
They've also turned a corner on production. I assume the first 3 Newpeth albums were intentionally basic from a production standpoint, but I'm glad they turned a corner with ICV and this one. Some pretty cool stuff happening from a soundstage perspective.

I would be fine with just cleans from now on, but still doing something in the style of GR again would be great. Not sure I really love any of the individual songs as much as moments, other than A Story Never Told, by far the best one for me. Maybe 4 would be my next fav.

Yeah no the Dream Theatre vibe of the singles wasn't my thing either, slightly hesitant towards this one. Going in tomorrow.

I'm sorry guys I really wanted to give this a 3 but Johhny broke into my room and he's only wearing a kimono and wielding a cattle prod. I really wanted to like this but he's threatening not to shock me anymore if I don't 1.5 this

Agreed. Incredibly pathetic argumentation.

This album sounds nothing like Blackwater Park or even Ghost Reveries; the closest thing I can compare it to would be something in between Watershed and Heritage, with emphasis on unpredictability, experimentation, and a dark, claustrophobic atmosphere combined with a healthy spoonful of classic prog rock cheese. Sorry, Oldpeth fans, but if you absolutely hate that cheesy classic prog rock sound, you might just be lukewarm on this album
good rev / most promising thing I've heard anyone say about this album so far. been putting off the late part of this band's discog after I realised they hit a late creative peak between Watershed and Heritage and it seemed likely that the next few would be diminishing returns, but ig I'll pull through to get to this and In Cauda sometime

They’re all worth a listen, Johnny. You’re in for a treat with In Cauda Venenum especially.
