When 'Antichrist' came out it was almost a NIN aligned bonus for fans of that band and it was campy fun (even released on Halloween?), though clearly no masterpiece.
After that it was a bit of bouncing between the Bowie playbook of artistic reinvention and retreats back to his 'roots' to try and keep relevant really, always been something very manufactured and obvious about his music n' marketing.
Basically a Bowie acolyte who lives in a place where every day is Halloween.
Part of the Bowie secret was surrounding yourself with the absolute best (Iggy Pop, Brian Eno, Visconti, etc) and MM was never quite able to do that to the same level (esp after pissing off Reznor).

i've never been a fan of his music, although there are some fun tunes in his discog. he's always seemed pretty down to earth and articulate in interviews, i thought he had more fans on here

yeah, he's no idiot, it has been a very clever and well (seemingly) calculated career...perhaps not so much now after the extra curricular bad activity which I have the gist of but have tbh haven't researched much beyond that. It came as no massive surprise put it that way.
