@uncle this trash was a psyop, fr. For all their shit-housery, DG always had at its core a real artistic vision and a unique way of doing things, even if they don't always work out. This is just a nothingburger with some attitude.
Of course, only DG will continue to have a lasting legacy in the next 10-15 years.

New song is sick, but this dude needs to stay out of his own way

Peggys production style feels remnants of mid to late 2000s mashup culture, like I would assume his introduction to beat making was probably in something like Sony vegas like a YTP rather than a DAW. Now that's honestly the aspect that draws me to jpegs output, he sounds like some obscure rando on mp3.com/newgrounds that managed to build a legitimate community from sheer dedication. The internets littered with beats chopped up from unrecognizable sources with no concern for pop sensibilities/'traditional songwriting', difference with Peggy is that he kept at it rather than abandoned his account after a year or two of obscurity. I do think deathgrips sound comes from a drastically different place than jpeg, it's basically a math/noise rock drummer learning DAWs and hanging out with friends. They're more of a cultural clash of people while jpegs a clash of underground internet influences, like most producers since like idk Soulja boy(coincidentally a newgrounds kid) his sounds built out of learning software without a teacher and conversing with peers doing the same diy approach.

couldn't agree more rabid, incredibly well said. there's a reason why david bowie and bjork are on record citing dg as an influence while this dude is trying to stay relevant picking fights with odd future.

Sidenote on the topic of "top experimental rap" you can go to like any target and find tyler the creators entire discography in the vinyl section, I've still not seen any physical jpeg albums or shirts in person and I'm from the dmv lol

I mean despite the streaming numbers I wouldn’t necessarily say he’s mainstream… like you’re not gonna hear a peggy track on the radio.
He’s coming thru my town in October playing a 1200 cap room. So definitely big, but not like Tyler level.

@alex/bat
i get where you are both coming from. when taking a deep dive into dg's/jpeg's production styles stark differences arise. not only in sound as alex pointed out but in the roots of the production itself and how the beats are sourced as BAT stated. grips feels more like they borrow from math and idm where jpeg feels closer to cities aviv or madlib relying heavily on sampling. however-and this is why jpeg gets so hot when people bring up dg(besides the weird racial stuff i wont get into)- the reductive yet harsh reality is both artists are experimental hip hop acts at their core. to my -albeit careless ears-both rap abrasively and loudly over experimental beats. how the beats are sourced may be different but at their core they both inhabit similar spaces in the same genre and share a ton of fans because of their similarities. i will grant jpeg has carved out his own path that is separate from dg at this point. i wont grant that it is a particularly unique or interesting path as to me his early work feels like it bites the stuff grips/cities aviv/clipping were doing at the time, but that is a matter of opinion and i won't fault people here i really love for enjoying him. as i said before not only do i not enjoy any of this guys music particularly because i think he's terrible at rapping but the absolute shit i got on here for enjoying death grips by people who now claim this guy is king just doesn't sit right with me. feels like run the jewels all over again.

i don't think you can make a good faith claim about being top anything based on album sales or having your stuff featured in target. maybe top sellout idk lol. like i said on the last page i agree with jpeg. he is more experimental than earl at this point. earl is lazy as fuck and never lived up to his potential even though i still very much enjoy his music.

some rap songs was pretty experimental, but outside of that i never felt earl inhabited that space. tyler is a great producer but again i don't feel like i'd categorize much outside of bastard as experimental

My whole point is the label itself is silly and I don't really think any of them are doing anything truly unprecedented. They make beats on a laptop polish them and then rap over them, they're alternative to the radio sound. All of them have unique qualities, but even tyler being a mainstream success something like chromocopia/whatever his last album was called isn't going to instant click with like people raised on boombap and trap.
But yeah idk i just feel like genre labels are odd grouping, regional scenes makes more sense to me. Korn doesn't sound like limp Bizkit which doesn't sound like Deftones which doesn't sound like slipknot and so on, and pretty much any band/artist attached to a subgenre usually states their disapproval with being labeled. As such self labeling ones genre is just kinda cheesey, albums probably gonna be pretty good but like he's just fooling himself into burying his album on search engines. But yeah idk I guess I'm just old and jaded now

all music being derivative aside my take is each has offered at least something unique albeit jpeg to a lesser extent who i feel took advantage of his less terminally online predecessors offering a cleaner more accessible sound.

and as im sure you realize therein lies the irony as jpeg started this discussion by labeling himself the king of experimental hip hop

Everyone knows panteras the king of power metal
And yeah it's still cheesey, think more people care about the earl jab rather than which niche they actually belong to. I'm just blabbering, watching mothra vs godzilla

hot take: peggys vulgar display of power is better than panteras
