i'm not a big courtney love fan or anything, but i read a recent quote from her describing taylor swift as a musical "safe space" for girls and i found myself agreeing with it. like Beyonce, she's really grown into something that goes beyond the idea of "genre" or "a musical artist" but in a different way. she has some good stuff and i liked Evermore, but her recent music just feels boring to me. it's like later era Mark Kozelek or something, bloated and boring and indistinguishable, no hooks, too much talking, too much "atmosphere."
i am not going to comment on Beyonce's new album because i haven't listened to it but i feel like music is really suffering from all these monolithic streaming albums. critics are afraid to call it what it is because they are trying to connect with younger listeners who don't understand the concept of a tight twelve track album, and instead are more interested in protecting what they see as "theirs." i see people hailing this as a masterpiece but i don't think it is going to age that well, this is just so boring and there is nothing on here as good as Willow, Blank Space, Style etc.
