Sky Void of Stars destroys City Burials in every way agreed. I love that album. Only one of the past three that I come back to.

City Burials works surprisingly well given its laid back approach. I'd risk saying Lacquer is on par with Vakaren and Absconder. The flow is satisfying too, it starts on a high note and saves the heaviest tracks for the final.
Their latest flows well as well, but it's front loaded. After Temporal there are only two slightly more interesting songs, which still don't reach the same heights as Thrice or Lilac.

this always has been the weakest album in my opinion. on first listen over a decade ago i remember it all just bleeding together into one monotonous song. a relisten improved things but i have to give this more spins

Maybe their worst album, not sure what happened here. The opener kind of bangs

Folks really like this less than VE? Huh.
It bleeds together for me as well... which actually works well with the nocturnal atmosphere.

VE is way better for sure

I'm not really willing to argue, 'tis not my favourite Katatonia as well. Though... this one's samey but with genuine gloom and grit, and VE mostly just oscillates between 'goofy' and 'uneventful'. A decent first half and a lot of nothing in the second, Evidence and Omerta are the only standout songs there.
