I don't understand how you guys think this is a departure from Villains. It might as well be a disc B of that record. The fuzziness, the rhythms, the guitar sound, the voice effects, all has been already on Villains. And don't get me wrong, I liked Villains, so I don't mind at all but to draw parallels to Lullabies or EV seems a bit far fetched. EV was experimental and raw, lullabies had beautiful melodies and really a wide variety of vibes (compare I never Came, Blood is Love, the bluesy Killer Scene and the ballad Goodbye), while on this one the atmosphere throughout the album is samey.
I miss some hardhitters and slower songs here, but otherwise quite catchy rock music that keeps you engaged.

On a first listen, this is way better than I thought it would be.
I get the EV and Lullabies comparison on some moments, but also agree that it has a little bit of a Villains sort of swing; but this time the songs are actually good, and the production is miles ahead of Villains, so that's better.
Let's see how this grows.

I said this before, but Il say it again: I don't hear any Villains similarities on this record, or they're minimal at best.
The riffs are fuller, the bass is actually prominent and drives much of the whole affair and the tone of the album is more akin to a EV and LTP mix than anything on Villains.

greeny i would argue era vulgaris sticks to the same atmosphere throughout too. and it's not much of an atmosphere, more like a vacuum,, but i dig that about it. do agree the lullabies comparisons are weaker

not getting too much out of this for now. sounds solid enough but it's missing key moments in songs that would grab, hmm. paper machete grooves hard tho

The bass is the highlight on the record for me so far.

unsure how much i fw this so far, but this is the take. What the Peephole Say might have passed for a Villains song though, could see that going cheek to cheek with Head like a Haunted House

I'm not completely sure how I feel about this one. I'm gonna have to listen to it a few more times. Some albums I dislike upon my first listen and then end up loving it after a few listens.

One thing is for sure, this album has some of their best guitar solos in a long while. In fact, almost every song has some outstanding guitar work, even if it's a small guitar solo that's not meant to stand out. I find myself enjoying even duller songs (made to parade) a lot more because of these.

I don’t know, I thought the solos here were some of the weaker points on here

my biggest concern wasn’t that I didn’t ‘get it’… this was just dull, I was completely unmoved. Snoozy.
I’ll try again regardless, but indifference is the worst feeling when it’s a band you once enjoyed
