I mean, that's part of the point? A lot of De Staat's lyrics are satirical and take aim at tropes in entertainment, societal trends, etc. Torre's often putting on that kind of character. Can't take it so seriously at face value.

And that’s fine, i just don’t find it compelling or interesting 🤷

Shame. But that be how it be.

blaming him for a lack of will to improve is just as bad tbh. typical presumptuous internet music discourse faux pas.

Ah, but i didn’t do that, did i? I wondered, speculated. That’s all. It’s a question, not a condemnation. Lack of comprehension and, further, condescension, is another typical internet faux pas

the "it's a satire" line is fine and palpable throughout this but it ain't exactly a recipe for fun
got flashbacks at numerous points to Viagra Boys (whose cocktail of irony is admittedly far less sufferable) and the good ol' Xiu Xiu CLAP BITCHES CLAP track, which imo is closer to the money (and more ridiculous) for this deadpan schtick

Ugh, Viagra Boys... not a nice comparison.
De Staat's previous album was waaaaaaay more fun. It had bouncier grooves and veered slightly more towards that hyper-ridiculous edge (YES!), which helped infuse some much needed charm into the equation. This feels snarkier, but then they did snark before so perhaps my old weathered self is simply projecting here.

Hey now, we can disagree but let's not turn this thread into bad vibes. It's a fuckin De Staat thread.

True. There’s no need to go further.

trif : I get them not being your style, but blaming him for lack of trying is silly.
MoM: Oh, not trying in terms of performance, but improvement
curious

It’s all good. I don’t want bad blood or anything. I’d rather us talk it out and move forward.

I just wonder, because there is so much you can do with the voice, and so much improvement can be made with time and effort, that I’m interested in how much goes into the vocalist’s improvement of that. I’m just curious. It’s a speculation into what could be down the line, cause i see how some improve and wonder when others don’t (not specifying), why not put more time into the craft. All personal choice,

Torre's voice has never been the most technically sound, but it works well with their aggressive dance-punk style. He's improved for sure since the debut, but I'm not exactly sure where else to go that wouldn't clash with their established sound. That's not a lack of effort, that's finding what works as a performer, and the dude rocks it.

His primary strength is as the lead songwriter, which is an area he has shown a lot of talent in and an ability to diversify his approach. The band's debut was written and performed entirely by him alone.

Understandable, they’ve got what the want to get out of it, and i just don’t gel. It’s all good. I haven’t heard their prior material, so i can’t attest to his skills then.

maybe the style hes singing in is just not your cup of tea and thats ok. trying to meet the music where it is instead of putting your own expectations on it is good practice, though. who is saying torre isn't exactly doing vocally what he feels is right for their music? what if the whole band feels that way? idk you asking that is a question worth asking but asking it in the context of you questioning if he puts any effort in improvement is pretty weak. like, improvement to where, even? what do you want to hear him improve in?
